A fireplace makes a house a home...
Select any image to see a larger view of the fireplace. Some of my fireplaces are installed in new homes, others added when existing rooms are remodeled. In either case, I cut the stone accurately to fit the location, and design the piece to be appropriate and proportionate to the room. After viewing these mantelpieces, you can follow the story of a fireplace, from design through carving to installation on the next page.

I designed this Romanesque limestone fireplace for an octagonal shaped room addition to an English country style home. Note the hand painted tile above the firebox opening.
This Arts and Crafts style fireplace is in a home addition designed after the work of the 19th C. designer and craftsman William Morris. I designed this fireplace after studying examples of his work and the architects plan for the addition, to create a unique individual piece which would complement the home. The image on the left is linked to a JPEG picture showing the legs in greater detail, prior to installation. The vines and flowers emerge from a rough, "rockface", limestone surface. 24-W |

Another marble fireplace for the Valentine Museum, this one in the dining room. Both were created for the restoration of the 1812 Wickham
House. The February, 1999 issue of Antiques Magazine features this house
and the photos includes some of my fireplaces.

Prairie Style ... This 6' wide fireplace, based on the design of Louis Sullivan's Chicago Stock Exchange arch, was completed and installed in mid-1995. The photo to the right shows my workbench with the finished cornice for this fireplace in the background. In the foreground is the head with an ornamental band in progress. When you view the larger Jpeg image you will note the development of this band from the flat stone with the design penciled on (right side of picture) to the completed pattern (left side).
