The Greenman

The foliate head and the Green Man are traditional forms that represent irrepressible life, with the forces of nature merging with humanity.

The Green Man appears on countless gothic churches and castles. Similar images, blending a semi-human face with plant and foliage forms, occur in many cultures.

This keystone is set in the top of the arched entry of a large house. Built in a rural location, the house is surrounded by oak trees, and this Green Man pays homage to those trees.

Take a walk in a dark forest late at night and you might imagine creatures like these looking at you from among the trees.

The Bamberg Green Man
This sculpture is inspired by a German carving from the early 13th century. My original carving is installed in a rubble stone retaining wall of a brook, with the water flowing through his mouth.
