Terra cotta is a cast, glazed clay. Early in the 20th century there were some very fine terra cotta companies based in Chicago.

These four images show the exuberant rococo terracotta ornament on the Garfield Park Field House on Chicago's West side.

Classic Green Man
This classic example of a green man is at Washington and Michigan Avenues in downtown Chicago.

The Cat on Pratt
 A corbel is a protruding bracket which supports the architectural elements above it. This cat is on Pratt Avenue in the Rogers Park neighborhood.

Laughing gnomesneering gnome
These two jesters or gnomes are also on Pratt Avenue.


This horned demon is on a large terracotta urn in the lobby of the Windermere Apartments in the Hyde Park neighborhood.
