Winged Victory Of Samothrace (a.k.a. Nike)
Citadel Center, Chicago, IL
Resin, Gold Leaf
8' tall, 7' tall base
This Nike is a second generation cast of the famous sculpture in the Louvre Museum in Paris.
Almost 4,000 leaves of 24k gold, applied by gilder Robert Frese, were required to cover this sculpture.
"I had access to a first generation cast—a cast taken directly from the original, made at least 80 years ago—and was able to get a mold from that one. Therefore, it picked up all the fine, subtle detail of the original marble sculpture. A first or second generation cast is extremely accurate; later casts, which are further removed from the original, will lose detail and have lesser quality."
